The Butler County Sheriff’s Office is investigating what authorities are calling a “suspicious death.”

A 72-year-old black woman was found dead inside her home on Wise Street in Georgiana on Wednesday at 7:25 a.m. Butler County Sheriff Kenny Harden said the cause of death is still unknown, but that “things just don’t look right.”

Harden said the body was discovered by a group of friends.

“Some ladies had come to pick her up to go to Bible study,” Harden said. “When she didn’t come out, they went in the house and found the lady lying on the floor.”

At this time, authorities are not releasing the name of the woman. The investigation, which has been labeled a death investigation, is ongoing. The Georgiana Police Department, the Butler County District Attorney’s Office, and the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences are assisting with the investigation.
