After a successful ceremony last year, citizens of Crenshaw County have planned a Veterans Day program for Monday, Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. at E.L. Turner Park in Luverne.

Last year, the event was held at Luverne’s veterans’ park, but organizers were looking for a larger venue this year.

Hilda Maddox, who has helped organize this year’s ceremony, said that a special presentation will be made to World War II veterans.

“We’ve identified 19 World War II veterans in our county, and we’ve invited them all,” she said. “I’m not sure how many of them will be able to make it, but we hope to have a good turnout.”

Like last year’s program, there will music and several patriotic readings.

“We’re going to have a speaker this year — Clifton Trotter,” Maddox said.

Trotter was a Marine and served in the Middle East, and he is also a Purple Heart Medal recipient.

Following the program, there will be a reception at the Luverne Public Library.

Last year, a Missing Man Table was set up to honor prisoners of war and those missing in action and killed in action.

“This year we’re actually going to do the Missing Man Table ceremony,” Maddox said. “In the ceremony, you offer a silent toast to those POWs and MIAs.”

All veterans and county residents are invited to attend both the ceremony and the reception.

There will be limited seating available at Turner Park, and attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair.
