Greenville’s annual downtown Christmas Parade this year could take place in less-than-ideal conditions. And we’re not talking about snow or rain.

The parade is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 9. That’s also during the time period when the Alabama Department of Transportation will be working on resurfacing Commerce St., which is part of Highway 10. The project calls for the complete milling, resurfacing and striping of a two mile section of the road from Bolling Street to west of U.S. 31.

Orange work signs have already been put up at road intersections leading to Commerce St. in preparation for the project which is expected to take 30 days to complete.

Mayor Dexter McLendon said ALDOT notified the city that work is expected to begin next week. Bids for the project were let in September.

“It’s not a good situation, especially with the parade coming up,” said McLendon. “But the city really had no say in the matter because it’s a state road.”

McLendon said city officials will likely close roads leading into Commerce St. prior to the start of the parade.
The parade is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.
