Former University of Alabama standout and Biggest Loser contestant Roger Shultz will serve as the keynote speaker at the Butler County University of Alabama Alumni Association’s annual meeting.
The meeting is scheduled for Nov. 1 and will be held at the Greenville-Butler County Public Library Pavilion. A social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner set for 6:30 p.m. Shultz will speak following dinner.
Shultz was a two-time All-SEC performer and a freshman All-American at Alabama and was elected team captain. During his collegiate career Shultz started 48 games at center for head coaches Ray Perkins, Bill Curry and Gene Stallings.
He was named to Alabama’s All Decade Team for the 1990s and was also selected for the school’s 50-Year Iron Bowl Team alongside Alabama greats such as Joe Namath and Ken Stabler.
After finishing his playing career, Shultz served as a graduate assistant coach on Alabama’s 1992 national championship team.
Shultz later took his competitive spirit to NBC’s hit show “The Biggest Loser.”
In 2008, he finished as the runner-up on the popular show. Shultz lost 164 pounds in just five months and won $250,000 in prize money.
The former Alabama standout has started Pride on 3 Foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to fight childhood obesity.
During football season, Shultz hosts “In the Trenches,” a syndicated radio show that also features former Auburn University quarterback Stan White.
Tickets for the event are $25 for adults and $10 for high school students. The event isn’t limited to University of Alabama alumni.
“We want it to be a family affair, and we want to it to be for anybody who likes football, likes Alabama football and fans,” Chapter President William Davis said. “It doesn’t have to be an alumni. It’s whoever is interested in coming. The sale of the tickets also help us raise money to provide scholarships for local students who are attending the University of Alabama.”
Davis said in May, the Butler County University of Alabama Alumni Association provided $6,500 in scholarship money to local students.
