The Ritz Theatre’s facelift and update continue with the approval of a new sound system for the theater and new lockable glass cases for the faade of the circa 1935 structure.

The Greenville City Council voted Monday night to approve purchasing four outdoor display cases with lockable doors, totaling $7,100 for the downtown theater. $3,115 of the purchase will come from the General Fund, with the additional $3,985 to be paid from the Ritz Surcharge Account (from a surcharge on all ticket sales for events held at the Ritz).

A sound system from Music Alley, Inc. was approved at the tune of $27, 074.

“Let me make this clear concerning this system . . . the money for this is coming mostly from a $25,000 allocation from Sen. Mitchell and the State,” Mayor Dexter McLendon said.“This system was researched and chosen by Tom Payne and Cleve Poole, and they believe it will work well for our theater.”

The balance for the system will be expended from the Ritz Surcharge Account.

The following expenditures were also approved by the Greenville City Council on Monday night:

– Ortivus – $2,235.10 for the 2009-2010 software maintenance for fire/ambulance billing program.

– Alabama League of Municipalities – $2,656.59 for 2009-2010 membership dues.

– Terminix – $2,784 for the Termite Treatment and Service Plan for the Ritz Theatre.

– Greenville Cash & Carry – $ 2, 340.17 for carpet in the new location for the police station (the former BOE Central Office).

The next regular council meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 31 at 5:30 p.m.
