Amateur radio personalities took over the airwaves at Q-94 in downtown Greenville on Wednesday as the Greenville Lions manned the booth for their annual 27th Annual Radio Day.
A total of 175 sponsors supported the club’s signature fundraiser, with approximately $10,000 raised for Lions sight-related charities on a local, national and international level.
“We had another great day on Wednesday. We appreciate all the sponsors who donated to us for their ads, and all those who donated door prizes for our very popular trivia contest,” said Ricky Cargile, “Quiz Master” and Lion secretary, said.
“We also want to thank Q-94 for letting us take over the station and WAKA for giving us TV coverage. And I don’t want to forget all our newest Lions for stepping up to the plate and helping make this a success.”
Greenville High School head football coach Ben Blackmon, voted “Ugliest Man in Butler County” by callers Wednesday afternoon, said his new title was “a humbling experience.”
“I didn’t know that many people around here thought I was that ugly,” he quipped.
Along with the title, Blackmon will get the honor of riding atop the porcelain throne in this year’s Christmas parade.
Tony Johnson was selected the runner-up for the “Ugliest Man” title, which has proven a tongue-in-cheek popularity contest for many of the county’s most prominent citizens over the years.
“Everybody has a lot of fun, and we’re raising funds for a great cause. What could be better?” said Cargile.
