The Greenville Middle School 7th and 8th grade teams wrapped up their season last Thursday with losses versus Millbrook.
The 7th grade fell 22-0, said coach Josh McLendon.
“We had some chances right before the half and at the end of the game,” McLendon said. “In the end, they made the plays and we didn’t.”
For the season, Allen Smith, Skilar Moorer, Kionte McGrew and Tristen Stinson had a great year, McLendon said, with Stinson leading the defensive attack and Smith, Moorer and McGrew driving the Tiger offense. The team finished with a 2-2 record, beating Wetumpka twice, with both losses occurring versus Millbrook.
“The future looks good for this group,” McLendon said.
The 8th grade squad had a similarly disappointing evening, losing its match 44-16.
“We played hard but we were overmatched,’ McLendon said. “Our kids never lacked heart; we were just a little outmanned by a stronger, faster 6A program.”
Though it started close, two costly turnovers before the half caused Millbrook to slip beyond Greenville’s reach, McLendon said. Jerome Watkins led the team in rushing and touchdowns. Defensive players Parrish Patton, Donovan Lindo, Dequarious Peterson and Wesley Miller all did a good job of trying to contain Millbrook’s undefeated offense, McLendon said.
For the season, GMS 8th grade squad had a 3-3 record, with two losses to Millbrook and one against Charles Henderson. The Tigers claimed two victories against Wetumpka and one redeeming win versus Charles Henderson.
“We have a fantastic group of young men, and it was a pleasure to be around them this year,” McLendon said. “I look forward to seeing them on the field the next four years as players for the varsity program.”
A football banquet will be held on Nov. 1 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the GMS cafeteria. Tickets are available at the school for $5.
