Food Feature: Down home southern goodness

Never judge a book by its cover, and never judge a restaurant by its appearance.
Super Foods of Greenville is more than just a grocery store. Come
early, cause the lunchtime crowd can get pretty large, although the
line usually moves quite fast.
A step inside the right door of this store reveals a hidden culinary
gem—the daily lunch counter.
I went for a standard meat and two vegetable plate, opting for chicken
as my meat. They usually offer a variety of chicken dishes, from
boiled chicken to chicken fingers, but the fried chicken pieces are by
far the best. I am a dark meat fan, so I loaded up with two chicken
legs.
Its hard to really mess up fried chicken, but it is also equally hard
to take such a common place meal and knock it out of the park. Super
Foods, however, takes this chicken and makes it something special. The
chicken skin is perfect, airy and crisp, and the chicken is cooked
just long enough to be tender without drying it out to much.
For sides, I grabbed some collard greens and macaroni and cheese. The
greens are excellent, seasoned to perfection with fat back. As for the
macaroni and cheese, this isn’t your run-of-the-mill boxed macaroni
product. It is a homemade cheesy concoction that really sticks to your
ribs.
You get a choice between corn muffin and yeast roll, but for my money,
cornbread is the way to go. It’s not too sweet, so for those who
prefer a dryer muffin, it will meet your expectations
Grab a drink, southern cuisine this good tends to register high in the
salt department.
Happy Eating.
