Even though they left Florala with a 60-13 win, head coach Miles Brown said he wasn’t that pleased with the way his Tigers played.
“We just played very sloppy in the first half,” Brown said. “I just wasn’t happy with it.”
First play from scrimmage, Chuck Thompson ran in a 28-yard touchdown to get things going. The Tigers failed to pick up any points-after, McKenzie 6 – Florala 0.
McKenzie battled out two more touchdowns on the ground, first with Emmanuel Johnson on a 22-yard touchdown and followed by Cliff Pugh with a 3-yard run. The Tigers picked up one extra point, making the score 19-0.
On the next possession, Sir Wallace Presley chucked it 55-yards into the hands of Cliff Pugh, and grabbed the extra point making the score 26-0.
Presley seemed to fall into a grove in the air, managing to score two more touchdowns, a 24-yarder to Johnson and a 30-yarder to Matt Lewis, before the close of the first half. McKenzie led, 40-0.
Following the half, Florala managed to pick up 6, to bring the score to 46-6.
Terrence Clemons came in as quarterback after the half and found Nicarius Peterson for a 17-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion was good, 52-6.
McKenzie grabbed two more off a safety, but gave up another 7 to Florala to bring the score to 54-13. Ladarius Grace ran in a 29-yarder for the Tigers final touchdown, but McKenzie failed to pick up the extra point.
The score ended 60-20, after the Tiger gave up one more touchdown off a kick return.
Xavier Smith led in rushing, picking up 100 yards off 9 carries. Sir Wallace Presley completed 4 out of 5 attempted passes for 109 yards and 3 touchdowns. Smith also led in tackles with 7, followed by Tadarius Gill with 5 tackles and 2 sacks. Chuck Thompson scooped up two interceptions for the night.
“Its great to win, but I just don’t like sloppy ball,” Brown said.
The Tigers will face their toughest opponent yet next week when they host Brantley at home.
