The Highland Home Flying Squadron overcame a sloppy field and a key injury to defeat Central-Hayneville 13-0 Friday night.

In addition to more than five inches of rain earlier in the week, an hour-long downpour before the game contributed to a soggy playing surface.

“Central loaded up the box, the field was bad and they did their job inside,” said head coach Tom Pinkston. “It was great for them that it rain.  It helped them more than it did us.”

Marquise Randle had 120 yards rushing and scored one of the Squadron’s touchdowns, while John Dunn connected with Tay Fuller for a touchdown pass for the other score.

Unfortunately for the Squadron, Dunn went down in the second quarter with an ankle injury.

“The more we played, the worse the field got, and then you’re bringing in second and third-string quarterbacks trying to deal with those conditions,” Pinkston said. “We didn’t have any rhythm offensively and couldn’t get it going.”

The Squadron finished with 13 first downs and 293 yards of offense while Central had 10 first downs and 140 yards of offense.

“Our defense played well, but we’re still making silly mental mistakes,” Pinkston said. “We’ve got to grow up as a football team.”
