Joseph Edwin (Joe) Haygood, Jr., passed away Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012.  An almost  lifelong resident of Greenville, Ala., he currently resided in Birmingham, Ala.  The son of the late Joseph Edwin Haygood and Lucy Seale Haygood, Joe was born in 1942 and would have celebrated his 70th birthday next month. His survivors include his wife, Jean Williford Haygood of Birmingham; sisters Nan Haygood of Ringgold, Ga. and Ellen Haygood (Bruce) Phillips of Ootlewah, Tenn.; stepdaughter Terri Langford (Andy) Odum and grandchildren, Andrew Wilks Odum and Kathleen Morgan Odum of Birmingham; niece Beth (Stewart) Cook of Littlestown, Pa.; one great niece and five great nephews.

Joe graduated from Greenville High School and was employed by Liberty National Life Insurance Company for 39 years until retirement. He served in the Special Forces and retired from the Army Air National Guard in 1981. As a former Boy Scout and as a person who loved to mentor young people, Joe served as Scoutmaster for many years. Joe was in the Greenville Lion’s Club for 18 years and served as sight chairman for many years. A man of deep personal convictions, Joe donated monthly for 29 years to Children’s Christian Fund to ensure several children had a better life. He also had a contagious humor and love for life that impacted all those who counted him as a friend.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012 in the chapel of Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home in Greenville, Ala. with Rev. Allen Stephenson officiating and Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. prior to the service. Following the service, full military honors will ensue at Magnolia Cemetery where Special Forces members will serve as Honor Guard.
