Preparations are already underway for one of Crenshaw County’s biggest events: The World’s Largest Peanut Boil, put on by the Crenshaw County Shrine Club.
Shriner Andy Compton said 25 tons of peanuts have been ordered to be boiled for the event, which kicks off next Wednesday and runs until Labor Day.
“We’ve also got a ton ordered to parch, so in total, we’ll have about 52,000 pounds of peanuts,” he said.
Several years ago, the Shriners installed new boiling equipment that allowed them to reach the current tonnage and added the roaster.
Despite being held Labor Day weekend, the peanuts rarely last until Labor Day.
“Last year, we ran out on Sunday afternoon, so we’ll go until we run out,” he said. “We’ll start selling Wednesday morning, so everyone can come out and get some.”
