The Greenville YMCA Tigershark swim team will be traveling to Montgomery this weekend for their first swim meet of the season.
Some nine Greenville Tigershark swimmers are scheduled to face off against the opposing Bell Road YMCA swim team starting at 8:15 a.m. Saturday.
Deborah Haire, who has lead the team in the past, will be returning to act as coach.
“I am a lifeguard and teach swim stroke clinics,” Haire said. “Nobody else volunteered to coach it so I told them I would be happy to do it again.”
Haire says she has loved swimming since she started at age 3 and enjoys passing her knowledge along to the kids.
She likes to start teaching swimming at an early age, Haire said. Younger swimmers are taught basic swimming safety, how to blow bubbles underwater and practice getting in and out of the water before moving on to more complex strokes.
“We don’t start teaching actual strokes, freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke, until they hit about age 5,” Haire said.
