Though the building itself has not been completed, that didn’t stop farmers and citizens alike from coming out to the Butler County’s newest farmer’s market.

Richard Barnum says the building, which is located at the site where the old jail once stood, should be up soon.

Building or not, farmer’s will be selling their crop Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until there’s no more produce, Branum said.

Some 22 Butler County farmers have already signed up to participate, Branum said.

“Once the building is completed, I am sure more will join in,” Branum said. “The tin should be going on the roof on Wednesday.”

The shade will be a welcome relief for those like Peggy Olive, who was busy selling peas out of the back of her truck. A lone beach umbrella was wedged into her tailgate, providing a small amount of relief from the sun’s rays.

“It will be good when we get this building finish so we can have a little shade,” Olive said.

Still, Olive said the sun hasn’t kept customers away.

“We’ve been pretty busy,” Olive said. “I just think people have to get used to where we were. We we’re beginning to wonder if people went out to Beeland Park.”

Ed Teague said his tomatoes have been the hot item for him.

“There’s been quite a few coming in, but its going to take a while to catch on,” Teague said. “In a month’s time, you’ll see a big difference.”

Anyone interested in participating in the farmer’s market can obtain a growers permit at the county extension office, Branum said.
