Dixie Minor tourney teams hit the road

Greenville’s Dixie Minor all-star teams are on the road for tournament play beginning this weekend.
The 9-10 year olds (classified as AAA by Dixie Baseball) play in Enterprise on Friday in the sub-district tournament. Game time is 6 p.m. against Crenshaw County.
Head coach Keith Taylor said the team has been working to get better everyday and was even able to play practice game last week in Montgomery against the East Montgomery All-Stars.
The Greenville team won, said Taylor.
“We played seven innings and we threw seven pitchers, one per inning,” said Taylor. “Our defense still needs a little work, but we hit the ball well.”
The 9 year olds (AAA Rookie) start District play on Friday in Luverne. They play the Enterprise Americans at 4 p.m.
“Some of these kids have been on all-stars before and some of them haven’t,” said head coach Randall Petty. “Overall, everyone’s pretty excited.”
Petty said the only real handcuff for the team is a lack of experienced pitching.
He said most of the 9 year olds were paired with 10 year olds during the city’s Dixie Minor league season. 10-year-old pitchers were the norm during league play, said Petty.
“We’ve got a few who are going to pitch,” said Petty. “Wilson Ellis is one for sure. Right now, we’re still evaluating that.”
