Big green gators, slithery snakes, big-mouthed frogs and other swamp-loving creatures arrived in time for Summer Reading at the Greenville-Butler County Public Library this week.

“Miss” Jean Bauer, children’s librarian, sported an alligator hat and presented all the two-three and four-year-old children with a funny gator hat of their own Wednesday afternoon.

Twenty youngsters joined in to sing “creature feature” songs and to listen to stories about “The Big-Mouthed Frog” and “The Lady with the Alligator Purse.”

With some assistance from Miss Jean and her volunteers, the little ones also created their own big-mouthed alligator puppets and enjoyed snacking on “Gator-aid,” “snakes,” and “reptile sandwiches.”

Children are in for more treats for the final two weeks of “Summer Reading: Make a Splash,” says Miss Jean.

“For the July 14 and 15 sessions we have Miss Ruby Raindrop herself coming to visit and we want all the kids to wear their bathing suits,” she said.

A fun luau is coming up the following week, with an exciting program by The McWane Center of Birmingham closing out Summer Reading on July 23 at 3 p.m. with “Wonders of Water.” The young and young-at-heart are all welcome to attend this grand finale of the summer fun at the library.
