A high-speed pursuit led to a drug-related arrest, said Sheriff Kenny Harden.

David Anthony Sanders, 46, was arrested and charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, 2nd, attempting to elude, no seat belt and criminal littering.

Harden said Chief Deputy Joe Salter was making a routine patrol on Tuesday when he passed a vehicle in the other lane.

“He was around McGill Avenue in Georgiana when he observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed,” Harden said. “As he passed, Deputy Salter noticed that the driver did not have his seatbelt on.”

Harden said that the vehicle started speeding up when the deputy attempted to pull it over.

“The vehicle sped up to over 100 miles an hour and the driver started throwing stuff out the window,” Harden said.

Police managed to catch up with the vehicle after a few miles, Harden said.

After a search of the vehicle, Sanders was taken into custody.

“We were able to go back a long the road and find all the items he threw out,” Harden said. “He told us he threw them out because he got scared.”

Harden said the prescription painkiller Lortab, as well as nerve pills Valium and Xanax were confiscated, with 86 pills in all.

“Prescription drugs are a growing problem,” Harden said. “We are trying to stay on top of this.”
