Council member Ed Sims reported almost 2,400 people paid through the week to see the Dixie Youth Majors State Tournament and the city has already been asked to bid on the tournament again in 2012.

Sims said everyone from Dixie Baseball and all the coaches, parents and players were highly complimentary of Greenville, the city’s recreation department, the hotels and local restaurants.

It was a good job all-around by everyone involved.

Greenville’s Bill Lewis has been named the treasurer and immediate past chairman as an elected officer of the Automotive Aftermarket Association Southeast Inc. Lewis owns Southern Generators Inc.

Ace Bowling Center in Montgomery is hosting Goodwill Industries’ 3rd Annual “Bowling for Jobs” Bowl-A-Thon on Saturday. The fundraiser starts at 2 p.m. and registration and check-in is at 1:30 p.m.

Mayor Dexter McLendon joined Prattville Mayor Jim Byard and Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange in bowling last year.

Goodwill is one of the most popular places in Greenville every Thursday when the truck comes in. Lots of good bargains and we especially love to browse their book selections. 50 cents for a paperback and $1 for a hardcover.

However, some folks should realize that Goodwill is not their own personal dumping ground. Items that have no further use or value to anyone needs to go in the trash or the city dump.

Junk is junk.

The Blackmons will engage in an epic confrontation next Friday night in Montgomery’s Cramton Bowl. 7 p.m. kickoff. Opelika vs. Greenville.

Even though the “Champions Challenge” is basically a scrimmage (a win or loss isn’t scribed into the record book), we’re sure sibling rivalry will amount to an intense effort by both squads on the field.

Ms. Dean’s caramel cakes of Dean’s Cakehouse in Andalusia received some web press this week. A blogger, John T. Edge, posted his recap of stopping at the Bates Texaco in Greenville at Ext. 130 and purchasing a $17 layer cake from the case.

“Her caramel icing is smoky stuff, just this side of acrid in taste, just the other side of heaven in texture. Good enough to redeem an interstate off-ramp, which, in my book, means her cakes are transcendental confections,” Edge wrote.

To live here for so long and to not have tried this culinary treat. We’ll have to correct that.

Ms. Hanceville Nursing and Rehab Center Opaline Harper was named winner of the Ms. Alabama Nursing Home Pageant crown, but our hearts belong with Ms. Crowne Health Care of Greenville Betty Sheffield.

Vincent P. Womack, a 1982 graduate of Greenville High School, was awarded the prestigious Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation Award.

]He was one of the five teachers in the United States to receive this honor. Each teacher receives a grant of $10,000.

Mr. Womack is an instructor at the Foshay Learning Center in Los Angeles, California. He is a graduate of both the University of Michigan and University of Southern California and the son of Mrs. Ruby Womack of Greenville.
