Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Department are continuing their investigation into a fatal two-vehicle crash between a passenger vehicle and a propane gas truck which claimed the life of a Greenville man.
On Jan. 20, a 2008 Chevrolet Impala struck a 2020 Freightliner M2 on Butler County Toad 65. The driver of the propane gas truck – William Daniel Little, 45, of Forest Home –
appeared to be uninjured at the scene, according to Butler County Sheriff Danny Bond.
“I do not know what the contributing factors are at this point; it will be up to ALEA to determine that,” Bond said. “I do know that the truck had an onboard camera, so [Troopers] are going to be reviewing that [footage] before they make any determination as to what happened.”
The driver of the passenger vehicle, Vernon Harris, 55, of Greenville was said not to be wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Butler County Sheriff’s Office received the call about the crash at around 6:30 p.m. and responded to the scene with other first responders, including troopers from ALEA’s Highway Department, the Butler County EMA, Greenville Fire Department and M&D Fire Departments.
At around 8 p.m, the Butler County Sheriff’s Office asked residents to avoid the area. Multiple agencies working together were able to clean up the scene by around midnight.
“We had to get one of the other propane companies to assist because we had to offload the wrecked truck before we could move it,” Bond said.
An LP Gas Board Investigator was brought onto the scene, and the propane gas truck involved was said to have had no sign of leakage.
Troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division will continue to investigate the crash.
