Obituary – Dorothy Jewel Phelps Hughes

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Dorothy Jewel Phelps Hughes of Greenville, a devoted Christian and cherished aunt, who peacefully passed away at home on Jan. 11, at the age of 92 surrounded by her loving family.

Dorothy Jewel will be lovingly remembered by her family, Michael (Brenda) Coker, Nana (Daniel) Moore, Jeff (Tonita) Bentley, Rhonda (Jason) Harrison, Tracy Bentley, Jeanie (Mack) Griffin, Larry (JoAnne) Hughes, Ruby (Terry) McInvale, Wynton (Emily) Hodges, Jr. and Anthony (Vicki) Hughes; cousins; numerous great nieces and nephews, along with other extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew Jackson (A.J.) Phelps and Agnes Gertrude Dunn Phelps; her husband Willie Earl Hughes; her sister, Sara Elizabeth Phelps Coker and brother-in-law Frank Eugene Coker. 

Dorothy Jewel was born in Greenville, on Aug. 12, 1932. She was a lifetime member of Antioch East Baptist Church in Greenville. She was known for her unwavering faith, kindness and boundless generosity, and lived a life deeply rooted in her love for God, her family, and friends. She worked for almost 50 years at Boss Glove Factory in Greenville.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 18, at 11 a.m., at Antioch East Baptist Church in Greenville, with Bro. Blair McBride and Bro. Ronnie Boulware officiating. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. and service time at 11 a.m., at Antioch East Baptist Church. 

Pallbearers will be Michael Coker, Jeff Bentley, Tracy Bentley, Jody Day, Wayne Dunn and Anthony Hughes.
