In just one year, McKenzie High School’s baseball program has experienced a remarkable transformation under the leadership of second-year head coach Jared Edge. With a focus on discipline, accountability and community support, Edge has revitalized the team and its facilities, earning praise from players, parents and supporters alike.
“He truly holds the boys accountable for their actions both on and off the field,” said Troy Little, whose son, Trace Little, plays third base for the Tigers. “He cares deeply about them, not just about winning games. He checks in on their grades and motivates them to grow into respectable young men.
“I’m excited for baseball season. I believe we’re in for a great year, and it’s wonderful to see the kids genuinely excited about playing baseball again.”
Edge, a Highland Home native, joined McKenzie after five years at Holtville High School, where he helped lead the varsity team to an Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) 5A State Championship in 2023 and a runner-up finish in 2022. Bringing that experience to McKenzie, he quickly set to work improving the team’s culture and facilities.
One of Edge’s first goals was to enhance the team’s field. Thanks to support from the school board, the team has installed a new fence and spent the year leveling the outfield and filling in holes. Fundraisers have played a vital role in these efforts, with more planned to further improve conditions.
While facility improvements remain a challenge due to space constraints and funding, Edge continues to push for upgrades to enhance the team’s experience. New windscreens now shield the field from nearby backyards and Edge hopes to add a bullpen, a batting cage, and even lights someday.
According to Edge, even small upgrades like these can generate beneficial excitement among players and the community.
Edge’s dedication extends beyond aesthetics. He emphasizes character development and teamwork, values that resonate with both players and parents.
“I want to help anyone I am around to be the best person they can be,” said Edge. “I want the kids to know I’m always there for them and that I’m committed to helping them grow on and off the field. Helping them to be the best version of themselves is the main goal.”
Last year, the Tigers made the playoffs for the first time since 2016. With a mix of younger players stepping into key varsity roles, Edge remains optimistic about the team’s prospects despite a smaller roster.
Richie Ballard, the father of senior player Cameron Ballard and sophomore player Gabriel Ballard, said that Edge brought the passion back to the game for Mckenzie School.
“The boys are excited to play ball again,” said Ballard. “The biggest thing to me is that the boys have a given standard that they’re expected to live up to, not just on the field but off the field as well. Edge teaches them to take pride in doing all things the right way, not just the big things, but everything they do. I’m hoping that they can continue to build on the success of last year and make it to the playoffs again.”
To sustain progress, the Tigers are selling 4-by-6-foot mesh banners for $200, renewable for $100 next year. These navy banners with gold lettering will adorn the outfield fence, enhancing the field’s appearance while supporting the team financially. Additional fundraisers are in the works.
“It’s a challenge coordinating fundraisers in a small school where students are already involved in multiple activities,” Edge said. “But the community has been incredibly supportive, and I believe we can achieve great things together.”
The Tigers’ first game of the season is set for February 13th against Holtville, a team Edge knows well. As anticipation builds, the McKenzie community is rallying behind its baseball program, eager to see how far this new era under Coach Edge can go.
