In 1943, the United States was in the middle of World War II. The Greenville Advocate offered readers headlines and pictures featuring Butler County soldiers and advertisements for war bonds. Here is what was happening Dec 30, 1943.
Thompson’s plane forced to land at sea
Technical Sgt Scott Rogers Thompson was reported missing in action on Nov 10 after the plane he was in was forced to land at sea.
Thompson was a crew member on a B-17, which departed from North Africa on a bombardment mission to Northern Italy. The plane was believed to sustain damage from anti-aircraft fire.
His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Woodford R. Thompson of Forest Home, were notified of their son’s missing status via a letter from the Acting Air Adjunct General on Nov 27, which stated that they would be notified of any additional information immediately.
Paratroopers prepare for invasion.
In a photo, Cpl. Joseph Gillion, A Greenville paratrooper, was seen practicing for the coming invasion of Germany-occupied Europe. The photo shows Gillion making a routine jump at Fort Bragg – now known as Fort Liberty – in North Carolina.
Another Greenville paratrooper, Cpl. Paul Langford, made his first combat jump in the Sicilian invasion.
Ritz showcases cartoons, films, midnight screenings
During this week in history, the Ritz Theatre was showcasing a variety of shows to the Greenville public including a Walt Disney film, “Victory Through Air Power.” The technicolor film showcased the development of airplanes and predictions of planes in the future.
Additionally, the Ritz Theatre had a special New Year’s Eve midnight show, “Hi, Neighbor,” starring Lulu Belle and Roy Acuff.
Farmer of the week
The Greenville Advocate nominated J. Frank Arant of McKenzie for Farmer of the Week.
Arant farmed a total of 240 acres, which was divided up into cropland, woodland, livestock and leasing. Additionally, Arant raised around 40 hogs each year, and cold butter and buttermilk from his five cows.
