Butler County Sheriff Danny Bond delivered a formal announcement of his upcoming retirement Monday morning.

In a 9 a.m. social media post, the Sheriff attributed his upcoming retirement to ongoing health concerns.

“I am announcing my formal decision to retire from my position as Butler County Sheriff, with Jan. 31 being my last day in office,” Bond wrote. “After careful consideration, I have made the difficult decision to retire due to ongoing health issues.”

Bond was elected to the office in January of 2019 after defeating incumbent Kenny Harden in November 2018 elections. He began his law enforcement career with the Georgiana Police Department, transitioning to the Sheriff’s department three years later.

Prior to becoming Sheriff, Bond, a Greenville native, spent 16 years working with the Greenville Police Department, ascending to the rank of Patrol Captain before his election as Sheriff. His long career in law enforcement spans nearly four decades.

According to Bond, the position of Butler County Sheriff will be filled by an appointment made by Governor Kay Ivey.

“I have recommended Chief Deputy David Scruggs to fill the remainder of my 4-year term,” Bond said. The Governor’s appointee would have the option to run for re-election at the end of that term.

Bond expressed his gratitude for the years of support extended to him during his tenure in Butler County.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my supporters throughout my career, as well as the people of Butler County, who have entrusted me with their safety and security for two terms,” Bond said.
