Kenneth Crum, a Greenville native and local business owner, has officially announced his candidacy for mayor in the upcoming municipal election. Citing the need for change and greater community engagement, Crum aims to address workforce development, youth opportunities and government transparency.

“I moved back to Greenville roughly 10 years ago, and when I got back, I saw that there were a lot of issues that needed to be addressed, and no one was taking care of them,” Crum said. “I don’t think the citizens have a voice in the government at this point, so that’s kind of what precipitated this run for mayor.”

Crum is no stranger to community involvement, having spearheaded several projects through the Butler County Concern Citizens group, with a mission to address local issues. Through his campaign, he plans to expand his efforts to include citywide initiatives.

“Our mantra is to engage, serve and advocate for the people of Greenville under the umbrella that it’s time for change,” Crum explained.

Crum states that one of his top priorities is creating jobs with livable wages and preparing Greenville’s workforce for economic growth.

“Yes, there are jobs here, but a livable wage, that’s a problem,” Crum said, adding that workforce development programs could prepare both youth and adults for jobs in welding, industrial maintenance and other skilled trades.

Crum also emphasized the importance of keeping local talent in Greenville.

“Our youth grow up, graduate and if they leave for college, they don’t come back because they don’t feel there’s anything to come back to,” he said. “We need to create opportunities so they can return and thrive.”

Crum also highlighted the need for activities and resources for young people.

“Something as simple as giving the youth something to do socially, like [bringing in] bowling alleys or skating rinks, would make a big difference,” he said. “We say that children are our future, but is that just a cliché? Because, what are we doing?”

Crum’s campaign promises increased transparency and a commitment to ensuring all voices are heard.

“We’re going to have town hall meetings before and after I’m elected,” he said. “That’s how you get the feel of the people, what’s going on in their lives and what needs to happen.”

Crum said he believes that Greenville can overcome its challenges by fostering unity among its citizens.

“In order for Greenville to grow, we are going to have to work together,” he said. “When all people feel they have a voice and are able to contribute to what’s going on in their town, then they feel empowered and that’s what’s going to bring Greenville together.”

Crum attributes his values of service and leadership to his upbringing in Greenville and his experiences as an athlete and business owner. He graduated from Tuskegee University, where he played quarterback and was inducted into the university’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

“This is where I’m from,” Crum said. “I’m woven into the fabric of Greenville. My father, who was the first black commissioner in this county, Jimmy Crum, didn’t come from the upper echelon; he was with the people. That’s where that mentality that I have comes from.”

Robert Blankenship, president of the Butler County Concern Citizens, firmly believes that Crum is the right choice for the job.

“He’s a businessman,” Blankenship said. “He knows the ins and outs of running a successful business, so it won’t be a shock to him. He’ll have no problem getting done what needs to be done.”

Blankenship went on to highlight the importance of strong leadership in Greenville and expressed confidence in Crum’s vision.

“Greenville has a need for new leadership,” Blankenship said. “I know he’s the best man for the job. He wants to see his hometown be better and I believe he can do it. He’ll be a mayor for the people.”
