During its Nov. 25 regular meeting, the Greenville City Council delved into various topics, with the most significant updates centering on the Edge Theater.

Parks and Recreation Director Jerome Harris III expressed optimism about the theater’s role in not only providing local entertainment but drawing in revenue from surrounding communities.

“We created an atmosphere for not only Butler County but the surrounding area,” Harris said. “We’re going to get out in the schools and get them involved. All the people that have been going to Montgomery, hopefully they’ll come to Greenville.”

Closed in late 2023, the theater reopened on Nov. 29 under city management. Initially featuring eight screens, the theater is now operating on four while plans for the remaining space are finalized.

Harris provided council members with updates on hours, ticket prices, concessions and the potential addition of an on-site restaurant.

“So it’s just a matter of time,” Harris said of the restaurant negotiations. “I think [the owner] has several other [locations] going up right now and we’re kind of next in the rotation. So once we get them in there, we’ll get everything situated and get that going.”

Mayor Dexter McLendon stated that future updates on the Edge Theater would be shared via social media.

“Ms. Nikki Hunt is doing an amazing job for us there,” McLendon said. “Everything dealing with the movie theater will be on the city Facebook.”

In other business, the council approved:

* a lease agreement for coin and bill-operated amusement equipment;

* an expenditure of $54,565.25 for the Beeland Park Camellia Garden, which will be reimbursed with grant funds; and

* a budgeted expenditure of $5,974 for fire helmets and boots, also to be reimbursed by grant funds.

Additionally, Howard Meadows was reappointed to the Greenville Housing Authority board.

The next Greenville City Council’s next meeting is scheduled for Dec. 3 at 5:30 p.m.
