Members of the Greenville Camellia Society (GCS) visited Lurleen B. Wallace (LBW) Community College on Nov. 12 to celebrate the addition of a new camellia garden at the campus entrance. The garden, planted by the Butler County Sheriff’s Department, complements LBW’s new entrance sign and reinforces Greenville’s reputation as the Camellia City.
“We are so thrilled that our camellia plants will shine a spotlight on LBW’s beautiful new sign and further beautify Greenville,” said GCS President Jan Newton. “Part of our mission is to reclaim our camellia history while increasing awareness of our camellia heritage. So, it is very important to us to continue the Camellia City tradition of planting camellias in public places begun by our town’s camellia enthusiasts many years ago. We appreciate Dean Peige Josey providing us with this opportunity and thank Sheriff Danny Bond and his crew for working with us.”
Sheriff Bond expressed his department’s enthusiasm for the project.
“They called and wanted to know if we could help them plant at LBW because we’ve helped them before and we were glad to do it,” Bond said. “We always want to do whatever we can for the community.”
