It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Earnest Bertrom “Buck” Mobley, who peacefully passed away at the age of 95. Buck was born on Dec. 14, 1928, in Black Rock and lived a life rich with love, laughter and hard work. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 74 years, Rebecca Phelps Mobley; his parents, William Perry Mobley and Jessie Dickinson Mobley and siblings Carrie Frances Stallings, James Perry Mobley and his dear wife Rebecca. His youngest brother, Billy Joe Mobley, survives him, along with Billy Joe’s daughter in California.

Buck and Rebecca’s love story began on Christmas Eve in 1948, when they were married on the front porch of Preacher Gafford’s house. After starting their marriage with farming near Preacher Gafford’s home, they began a family in Crenshaw County where their first two children, Stephen Earnest Mobley (Cindy) and Connie Jean McDuffie, were born. In 1958, they moved to Chickasaw where Buck found work and they raised their growing family. There, Patsy Coleen Jordan (Jeff) and Jeffery Wayne Mobley (Stacey) were born.

Buck worked for Farrens Tree Service and retired after 36 years with Southern Tree Company. Despite humble beginnings as a farmer in Crenshaw County, he became a successful gardener in Chickasaw, raising beautiful gardens and providing the community with fresh produce, including over 300 tomato plants in one of his largest crops. He loved working the land, and his gardens were a source of pride and joy.

Buck and Rebecca’s devotion to each other and to their faith was evident throughout their 74 years of marriage. They were active members of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Chickasaw for many years. In 2023 Buck and Rebecca moved back to Crenshaw County and Rebeccah soon passed. He resided at the Luverne Health and Rehabilitation Center, where he found new companionship in dear friends, Charles “Goober” Dean and Jesse Watkins. Buck and Jesse shared many special moments, fishing, visiting family, and attending church at Chapel Hill Baptist Church together.

Buck is survived by his four children: Stephen (Cindy) Mobley, Connie McDuffie, Patsy (Jeff) Jordan and Jeffery (Stacey) Mobley; seven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was beloved by his family and friends and will be remembered for his kind heart, hardworking nature, and love for his family. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and devotion.

A graveside funeral service will be held for family and close friends Monday, Nov. 25 at 11 a.m. with burial at Damascus Baptist Church, Greenville.

He will be dearly missed but forever in our hearts.
