The Southern Alabama Veterans Ball celebrated the service and sacrifices of U.S. military veterans with an evening of elegance and gratitude on Nov. 9 in Andalusia. The event, organized by Alabama American Legion Posts No. 24 (Greenville), No. 2020 (Fort Deposit) and No. 80 (Andalusia), along with the Butler County Alabama Veterans Association, featured a steak dinner, live music and inspiring tributes.

“Being here today means the world to me, especially here in my now hometown,” said guest speaker David Michael Edwards, a 22-year Army veteran who served with the 75th Ranger Regiment. “It just means a lot to pour back into this place we love. It’s hard to encapsulate it with words.”

Edwards shared insights from his distinguished military career, which included 18 combat deployments and over 5,000 military free-fall jumps, leaving attendees inspired and moved. Major General David K. Pritchett, Adjutant General of the Alabama National Guard and Major Gerald Johnson also graced the evening as special guests of honor.

Event Chairman Ray VanCor expressed heartfelt gratitude to the sponsors and volunteers who brought the vision to life.

“This was an amazing evening,” VanCor said. “We’re so grateful to be able to honor our veterans and equally grateful for all of the people that came together to make this happen. Nina Bonner and her team [Simply Beautiful Events and More] as well as Danny and Michelle Black from ‘A Color Affair’ made everything look beautiful and the meal provided by Big Mike’s was outstanding.”

Veterans from across the region gathered to connect, reflect and celebrate.

“It’s events like these that remind us of the bond we share and the sacrifices made,” said attendee and marine veteran Jeff Boutwell. “It’s a privilege to be here.”

With an overwhelming turnout, organizers hinted at plans for a similar event next year, building on the success of this unforgettable evening.
