The Butler County Commission convened for its regular meeting on Nov. 13, appointing new leadership for the 2024-2026 term. During the meeting, the commission elected Commissioner Joey Peavy as chairman and Commissioner Allin Whittle as vice chairman.
District two Commissioner Jesse McWilliams initiated the motion to elect Peavy and Whittle, which was seconded and approved unanimously. The commission also agreed to keep the monthly meeting schedule for the second Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., with the December 2024 meeting rescheduled for Dec. 12 to avoid conflicting with the annual Christmas parade.
“So, the term goes through 2026 because two of us will have to run again, if we choose to, but our term ends in 2026,” said outgoing Chair Rebecca Butts. “So, that is why, with the split terms, we have to elect a chairman and a vice chairman to serve through 2026.”
In other business, the commission adopted a resolution to vacate Heartsill Lane, a public road. The commission also renewed a lease for the Central Volunteer Fire Department and accepted the Rules of Procedure for their meetings.
Public commentary featured William Lewis, who expressed concerns about the resources deployed during the recent Georgiana vs. McKenzie football game.
“I’m here to address the use of resources in reference to the Georgiana-McKenzie game,” Lewis said, referencing the heavy police presence. “The abuse of resources, I think it was just a ridiculous amount of police officers… it was just overboard.”
Commissioners responded by explaining that safety precautions were heightened due to a fierce rivalry between the team as well as reports of potential violence. Commissioners also noted that the concerns ultimately fell under the jurisdiction of the school board.
The meeting continued with reports from various county departments, including the EMA (emergency management agency) Director Rosie Till, who thanked the commission for its support and highlighted increased grant funding as instrumental to her department’s work. Following reports from the correctional facility, sheriff’s office and county engineer, the meeting adjourned.
The commission also reminded residents that county offices will be closed on Nov. 28 and 29 in observance of Thanksgiving. The next meeting is scheduled for Dec. 12 at 6:30 p.m.
