On Nov. 1, the Greenville Tigers’ locker room was a happy place as they learned they would be heading to the AHSAA 5A state playoffs after Charles Henderson Trojans were booted out of post-season play. On Nov. 8, there was a different feel in the Tigers’ locker room, as they were eliminated from the playoffs at the hands of the Central Clay County Volunteers, 51-0.

In a penalty-filled first half, the Tigers fell behind 7-0 on a five-yard Ladamion Boyd touchdown at the 5:30 mark in the first quarter. Two and a half minutes later, the Greenville cats were down 15-0 when Deshaun “Soap” Gibbons completed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Boyd. The two-point PAT run was good as the Vols went up 15 points over the Tigers.

To start the second quarter, Gibbons hit Boyd again on an 11-yard touchdown pass. With 11:52 left in the first half, the Vols had an advantage over the Tigers 22 to 0.

The Tiger offense moved out to midfield and a Tiger fumble gave the ball right back to the Vols. Boyd carried the ball on a 43-yard run down to the Greenville seven-yard line. From there, Gibbons went in from three yards out for the score.

Leading 30-0, the Clay County boys got their fifth touchdown of the first half with 1:40 on the clock when Boyd scored on a 15-yard reverse to put the Vols up 37 to 0 over Greenville.

Returning after the half, the Tigers helped the Vols move closer to the end zone with a personal foul. A run up the middle with 3:41 on the third-quarter clock gave the Vols a touchdown and a 43-0 lead.

At this point, the Vols substituted heavily. Sophomore Daylon Houston went up the middle on a three-play drive for another touchdown. The PAT attempt failed, but the Vols won 49-0 to advance to the next playoff round.
