On Nov. 1, the Heart of Alabama Food Bank’s Butler County Food and Fund Drive brought together local residents and food bank advocates at Super Foods in Greenville. Community Engagement Coordinator Amy Dennis was on-site collecting canned goods and monetary donations, with a commitment to supporting local food pantries and addressing food insecurity in Butler County.

“You know, in this day and age, things are expensive, and even people who are employed are seeking food assistance and coming to our local pantries,” Dennis said.

The Heart of Alabama Food Bank, based in Montgomery, services 12 counties, including Butler, directly and supports 35 counties overall. Donations collected at the event will directly benefit Butler County pantries like Joseph Ministries, Old Elam Baptist Church, Long Creek Missionary Baptist, Bethlehem Missionary Baptist and others that serve local residents in need.

“This is just a great opportunity for us to talk to people in the community about what we’re providing for this area and encourage people to give, especially when we’re talking about the holiday season,” Dennis added.

Monetary donations, Dennis explained, go a long way due to the food bank’s purchasing power — each dollar can provide approximately five meals. Those who wish to donate online can do so anytime through the Heart of Alabama Food Bank’s website, hafb.org, where every contribution helps support not just Montgomery but rural counties like Butler and beyond.
