First Steps Early Child Development Center held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house on Oct. 9, honoring local community helpers such as firefighters, police officers and government officials. The event attracted families and local leaders, highlighting the center’s role in early childhood education.

“We are so thrilled to be in Georgiana, serving the families here,” said Executive Director Lisa Nimmer. “It has been a wonderful opportunity to get to know the community and provide a space where children can thrive, learn, and grow.”

Children attending the event dressed as their favorite community helpers and interacted with firefighters, police officers and other officials. Georgiana Police Chief Jeremy Peagler was one of the community helpers onsite.

“I think it went well,” Peagler said. “It’s good to let the youth know that we’re here to help. We’re their friends.”

Peagler added that he was surprised by the level of interest shown by the young children. 

“For the kids to be that young, I didn’t expect so much of a response but they seemed really interested,” Peagler said.

The ribbon-cutting introduced the community to the center’s focus on hands-on learning and engagement with local resources.
