The Fort Dale academy Eagles captured their first region title in 3A Region 2 Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) play since 2009 with a win over the undefeated Monroe academy Vols, 21-14 Friday.
The Eagles got on the board first on a Jason Black touchdown run. The kick was good and the Eagles were up 7-0 right out of the gate.
But the Vols would have no part of that as they scored late in the second half to send both teams into the dressing room all tied up 7-and-7. In the third quarter, the Vols took their only lead of the night, 14-7.
Fort Dale answered late in the quarter with a touchdown by running back Dajon Winters’ hard run to pay dirt, and at the end of the third, the scoreboard read Eagles 14, Vols 14.
With less than four minutes to go in the game, the Vols attempted a game-winning drive. Defensive lineman Jackson Rogers batted a Monroe pass that was picked off by linebacker Tripp Albert as he lumbered down the field to the endzone, sealing the win at 21-14.
Monroe has one more region battle against Escambia Academy. After three road games in three weeks, the Eagles celebrate the win with a week off and will host Wilcox on Oct. 25.
