Say something, do something

There is a mantra urging individuals to report suspicious activity, “If you see something, say something.” Sometimes referred to as SeeSay, the campaign promotes public awareness of the signs of terrorism and terrorism-related crime and gives citizens an active role in the fight against terrorism.

It is good to remind community members they have a vital part to play in the big picture of their city, state and country. Another catchy phrase, “Don’t just say something, do something” could be employed in urging Americans to participate in government by exercising their constitutional right to vote.

In a democratic society, elected officials represent their constituents and vote on legislation based on the wishes of citizens. Community members may not always approve of every law passed, but when they do not, they have more choices than to simply complain. Representatives who do not vote to support the values of constituents can be voted out in favor of someone else who will listen to their people.

In local communities we hear from individuals who are unhappy with local, state or national government. However, these same people often admit they “do not like either candidate” and so, they do not vote for anyone.

But as a very wise woman said recently, “Guess what? One of them will be elected.” Voters have the opportunity to select the candidate who best represents local concerns. But when we only say something and don’t do anything, we have no part in helping make much-needed change.

Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen reminded citizens recently of their opportunity to register as voters ahead of the Nov. 5 general election. Electronic voter registration may be completed by visiting https://www.sos.alabama.gov/alabama-votes/voter/register-to-vote. A paper voter registration form may be delivered in person or by mail to the local Board of Registrars.

The deadline for voter registration is Oct. 21.
