Officers from the Greenville Camellia Society (GCS) were guest speakers at the Dogwood Garden Club in Montgomery on Sept. 30 and the Garden Club of Brewton on Oct. 3.
“We are so honored and excited to be invited to clubs and organizations around the state to tell the Camellia City story,” GCS President Jan Newton said. “Our mission is working hard to bring awareness of the historical significance our forefathers played in promoting camellias worldwide and our work is paying off.”
During the presentations, Newton highlighted the history and heritage of Greenville, known as “The Camellia City,” and discussed the use of Gibberellic Acid to encourage larger and earlier blooms in Camellias. Treasurer Mary Bates conducted a gibbing demonstration, explaining how the plant hormone is applied to enhance bloom size.
Vice President Helena Shirley discussed plans for the 2025 Greenville Camellia Show, which is set for Feb. 15-16 at LBW Community College.
Each guest left with a GCS informational hand fan and a bottle of Gibberellic Acid and the officers received donations to support the upcoming camellia show.
