One of Butler County’s oldest faith and community landmarks will commemorate its rich and deep history Sunday.
Butler Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church will host a historical marker dedication Sunday, Oct. 13, an event planned to memorialize the church’s role in the community’s spiritual and academic growth.
The ceremony will feature Bishop Dwayne Anthony Walker, presiding bishop of the Alabama-Florida Episcopal District, which includes more than three hundred churches, and the Alabama Historical Commission unveiling and dedicating a historical marker designating Butler Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church as a historical landmark.
“Butler Chapel is the oldest known independent Black congregation in Greenville and the earliest known high school for African American students in Butler County,” said Senior Pastor Micahel J. Evans in a recent media release.
“We are very excited about this historical event and invite the community to join as we celebrate this important event,” said Diaon Cook, historical committee chairperson.
The dedication ceremony will take place at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 13, in front of the church, which is located at 401 Oglesby Street in Greenville. The event is open to the public.
