The City of Greenville, in collaboration with the Butler and Lowndes County Sheriff’s Departments, the Greenville Police Department and the Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce, will host a charity golf tournament Oct. 9, to benefit the Alabama Sheriffs Youth Ranches. The event will take place at RTJ-Cambrian Ridge and aims to honor nine children and one adult from the Tallapoosa County Alabama Sheriffs Youth Ranch tragically killed in a multi-vehicle crash in 2021.

“They’ve had these types of tournaments in other places, and we have such a great golf course here,” said Greenville Mayor Dexter McLendon. “It’s for a good cause and it’s also a way to honor those lives that were lost and keep their memories alive.”

The Alabama Sheriffs Youth Ranches, a Christian non-profit organization founded in 1966, aims to provide safe, structured homes for at-risk children across the state. With four ranch locations and a corporate office in Montgomery, the organization relies heavily on donations from individuals, corporations and special events like this golf tournament.

Lowndes County Sheriff Chris West remembers the 2021 tragedy and hopes that local residents will attend the tournament in remembrance of the ten lives lost that day

“In honoring them, we’re just hoping to get as many local people to participate as possible,” West said.

The event will begin with breakfast and registration at 8:00 a.m., followed by a shotgun tee time at 10:00 a.m.

“RTJ will provide breakfast as well as lunch immediately after the tournament,” said Pat Downing, Development Coordinator of Events for the Alabama Sheriffs Youth Ranches. “There will also be door prizes and category prizes, such as men and women’s long drive.”

The winning teams in both gross and net categories will advance to the Craft Farms tournament in Gulf Shores on Mar. 7- 8, 2025.

“Each winning team will receive two rooms, a meal the night before, and entry into the championship tournament as their prize,” Downing said.

For more information or to register for the event, contact Pat Downing at (334) 462-0432 or via email at pat@alsyr.org. Registration will remain open until the tournament or until all 30 available team slots are filled.
