During the Butler County Commission meeting on Aug. 13, commissioners approved a resolution to raise the license plate issuance fee from $1.25 to $10, representing a 700% increase for vehicle owners.
Butler County Commissioner Jesse McWilliams notes that the commission was asked for a resolution of support but does not itself profit from the increase.
“This is not really a county commission issue,” McWilliams said. “We don’t receive these funds. We were asked for a resolution of support but the details are for Representative Sells and Senator Sanders to hammer out with the Sheriff, Probate Judge and the Revenue Commission.”
The resolution will be presented to U.S. Representative Chris Sells for consideration by the Alabama legislature.
“It’s still in talks, but nothing is settled,” Representative Sells remarked, emphasizing that the resolution is currently just a recommendation.
