Dr. James Larry Powell, age 76 of Hoover passed away after an extended illness on Thursday, Aug. 8.
Funeral Services was held Tuesday, August 13 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Georgiana with Rev. Danny Dean officiating. Visitation was from 10 a.m. until service time.
Dr. Powell was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Virginia Powell and sister-in-law, Charlene Powell and brother-in-law, Frank McGinnis.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Clarine Powell; brothers, Lanier (Gail) Powell and Lynn Powell; sister-in-law, Gerri McGinnis; step mother, Janell Powell and nephews, Griffin Powell, Dave (Amanda) Crenshaw, Adam (Patra) Crenshaw, Lance (Meredith) Powell, nieces Abby (Adam) Dodson, Lauren Powell and numerous cousins.
Larry was born May 14, 1948 to Harold and Virginia Powell. Larry graduated from Georgiana High School, class of 1966. He obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree from Auburn University in Auburn and pursued a Master’s degree from Auburn University in Auburn in communications. He then pursued his Doctorate of Communication from University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida Larry taught communications at Mississippi State University in Starkville, Mississippi for 10 years. He then moved to Orlando, FL to become a partner in a Political Consulting business for 10 years. His last teaching assignment was teaching Communications at The University of Alabama in Birmingham until his retirement.
Larry was an avid baseball fan having written numerous publications about the sport and its players. His love of baseball was evident in his collection of autographed baseball cards, and pictures of many players throughout the years.
Larry was a gentle man who loved God and his family and will be greatly missed by many friends and his family.
The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery
