The Greenville-Butler County Public Library buzzed with excitement as Mr. Bond’s Science Guys hosted a free science event open to all ages on July 23. Attendees engaged in age-appropriate science experiments focused on the topic of electricity.
“Today, we’re going to be talking about why we don’t use electricity to launch rockets into space,” said Professor Greybeard, also known as John Wicks from Nashville, Tennessee. “Since Alabama is a famous space state, I figured it would be a good question as to why aren’t we using electricity? If electric cars are so fast, if it is a good plan for our future, why won’t it work? So we’re going to do some experiments that help us understand that.”
Wicks, who has been entertaining and educating children with science for over sixteen years, emphasized the importance of hands-on learning.
“I will be calling people up to help me do experiments,” Wicks said. “I try to make sure everyone gets to participate in some way.”
Children were called up to participate in experiments ranging from hair-raising static electricity demonstrations to using an electric blower to launch balls across the room. These hands-on activities kept the young audience captivated and eager to learn.
Local resident Whitney VanCor attended the event with her daughter Addison.
“Addison enjoys science and I thought that this would be the perfect opportunity for her to learn more about science,” VanCor said. “All of the kids were very engaged and seem to have had a wonderful time.”
The event showcased the Science Guys’ dedication to making science fun and accessible. They offer after-school clubs, summer events, and in-school activities nationwide.
“We are accredited and actually work with school districts across the United States in helping them achieve curriculum requirements,” Wicks added.
As the experiments unfolded, participants gained a deeper understanding of electricity and its limitations in space travel, making for an educational and enjoyable day at the library.
