President Joe Biden announced Saturday he would stand down, withdrawing his bid for President. In a letter addressing Americans, Biden described his term in the office as the greatest honor of his life.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” Biden wrote in the letter. “And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”

Following the President’s candidacy withdrawal, Vice President Kamala Harris declares her candidacy, a move Biden had already endorsed in the letter.

“Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year,” Biden wrote. “Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump.”

Alabama representatives from both parties addressed the move over the weekend.

In a statement issued Sunday, U.S. Congresswoman Terri Sewell (AL-07) lauded Biden’s actions as President and proclaimed her support for Harris.

“President Joe Biden will go down in history as one of the most consequential and transformational leaders America has ever seen,” Sewell wrote in the statement. “I was proud to work alongside him to deliver billions of dollars in infrastructure investments to Alabama, lower health care and prescription drug costs, cancel student debt, and so much more.

“I plan to do everything in my power, from now until November, to make Kamala Harris the next President of the United States.”

Alabama Republicans also weighed in on Biden’s withdrawal. U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) issued a statement Saturday following Biden’s announcement that he would not seek re-election.

“Today, President Biden finally admitted that President Trump was right all along: Joe Biden was never mentally fit to be President,” Tuberville wrote in the statement. “Democrats and the media knew Joe Biden had serious cognitive issues and they used him as their puppet for as long as they could.

“If Joe Biden is unfit to run again, he is unfit to hold the nuclear codes. I join my colleagues in demanding that President Biden resign immediately.”
