Catherine Smith Stallworth was born to Eddie and Ruth Stuart Smith in Old Texas on Aug. 24, 1938. She passed away on June 9, in Pine Apple where she lived most of her life. 

Catherine graduated in 1956 from Moore Academy in Pine Apple. She attended Troy State University where she graduated in 1959 and later obtained her master’s degree from the University of Alabama in 1967.

She married McDuffie Stallworth II on June 7, 1959. They were blessed with two daughters, Selena Minor of Gulf Shores and Marcia (Tim) Walker of Birmingham. She leaves behind three grandchildren: Cary Walker, Catherine (John) Wiggins and Claire Minor. She loved her family dearly and played a major role in each grandchild’s life. She was their cherished Mama C.

Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, James Smith and her infant sister Anne Smith. She is survived by her brother William Smith of Port St. Joe, Florida and her aunt, Doris Brantley of Bay Minette. Catherine is also survived by many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.

Catherine worked as a schoolteacher for over 30 years. She taught at Excel Public School, Moore Academy, Monroe Academy, Lyeffion Junior High School and Hillcrest High School. Catherine adored her students and worked towards giving each child knowledge and skills for a bright future. She fostered a loving and positive environment to ensure that all her students felt special. 

Catherine was a dedicated member of the Pine Apple Methodist Church. She had a strong faith in Jesus Christ and devoted herself to her church family. At any special church event, you could always find her selflessly working behind the scenes to make sure everything was well done and enjoyed by all. The congregation always looked forward to her famous fried chicken every fourth Sunday.

Funeral services were held on June 17 at Dunklin Funeral Home in Greenville. Visitation was at 10 a.m. with the funeral at 11 a.m. with Reverend Jim Dunn officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Shriner’s Children’s Hospital or Ronald McDonald House in her name.
