A 2023 National Center for Education Statistics report highlighted significant challenges in hiring teachers across the United States. Butler County Schools Superintendent Joseph Eiland said, however, that the district is “ahead of the game” compared to many schools nationwide.
“We’re always looking for great people to fill these positions,” Eiland said. “People that want to dig in and grow with us.”
Eiland emphasized that Butler County is not merely seeking to fill vacancies.
“We’re not just looking for warm bodies,” Eiland stated. “We’re looking for people that are ready, willing, and able to pour into these students and help them realize their dreams, visions, and goals—things that these students may not even realize about themselves yet.”
The National report indicated that 86% of U.S. K-12 public schools faced difficulties hiring teachers for the 2023-24 school year, with 83% struggling to fill non-teacher positions.
Recent hiring signage for Butler County Schools showcases salaries based on degree and years of public school teaching experience, ranging from $47,600 to $91,912 for a 9-month contract (187 workdays per year). The signage also states that the district offers excellent retirement benefits and health/dental insurance at very affordable rates.
Despite national and statewide teacher shortages, Butler County currently has only eight teaching positions open. The county’s most pressing need is for dedicated and qualified special education teachers.
The state of Alabama is addressing the teacher shortage by offering Alabama Teacher Certification eligibility for Emergency or Alternative Teacher Certificates to individuals holding at least a Bachelor’s degree in any major from an accredited university. According to Eiland, the program allows those with a passion for teaching to gain experience while completing their certifications.
For those interested in joining the Butler County School System, available positions and application information can be found on the district’s website at www.butlerco.k12.al.us by selecting “Departments,” then “Employment,” and “Current Job Openings.”
