The Greenville-Butler County Public Library invites young readers, ages 6 to 12, to participate in a new program called “Kid Librarians,” where children can create their own display of books in the children’s area and share their favorite reads with their peers. 

“This is a program we started as a way to inspire children to love to read. We’re picking our first one now, to set up over the weekend,” Library Director Kevin Pearcey explained. “The Kid Librarian will get to make their own display, decorate it however they want, and recommend books to their peers.”

Children interested in becoming a Kid Librarian can pick up an application at the library’s circulation desk. Pearcey mentioned that the idea for the program was inspired by similar initiatives in other libraries, and is part of the library’s efforts to promote community involvement.

“We’ll do a little interview with them and take their picture,” Pearcey said. “Then we’ll select a new child every two weeks until we run out of applicants, that way everyone that applies will get a chance.”

Greenville resident Marcus Anderson shared his excitement about the program, mentioning that his daughter, who received her own library card last year when she turned five, can’t wait for the opportunity to share her favorite books. 

“She has always loved to read and tell you all about her latest book,” Anderson said. “We just finished Beauty and the Beast, but I think her favorite books right now are the Pinkalicious stories because she watched the show a lot when she was little.”

Selected Kid Librarians will not only be recognized inside the library and on social media but will also have their picture showcased in the Greenville Advocate. For more information, interested parents and children can contact the library at (334) 382-3216.
