On April 18, the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles denied parole requests for two men incarcerated for Butler County convictions. Hearings on April 23 included another man denied parole for a Butler County conviction.

Michael Bullock, 67, is held at the Red Eagle Work Center on sentences related to Butler and Crenshaw County convictions. He serves a life sentence for a 1990 Crenshaw County murder conviction concurrently with a 40-year term for attempting to commit murder and a third-degree burglary conviction handed down in Butler County in June 1991.

Court officials, victims’ advocates and family members of the victims or the inmates may appear at the hearing to weigh in on the request. Four representatives of the groups did address the board to oppose Bullock’s parole — the victim’s daughter Brandy Parker, Victims of Crime and Leniency (VOCA) representative Makayla Phifer and District Attorney Charlotte Tesmer’s Victim Services Officer Marquita Cook.

The board set Bullock’s next hearing for April 2029.

The board also considered a parole petition from Darashai Jackson, 26, who is housed at Kilby Correctional Facility serving a 15-year term for robbery in the first degree with a concurrent sentence of five years for third-degree robbery. Jackson’s request was denied and a reset date was set for April 2027.

Parole hearings were held for 20 inmates April 18. One of those was continued to a later date. Five were granted parole, and 14 were denied. The board also granted one pardon and denied seven pardon requests.

The board considered the parole request of Zachary Lee Reid on April 23. Reid, 37, is held at the Fountain Correctional Center on a 15-year sentence for manufacturing controlled substances in Butler County. Before that, he served just over three years for burglary in the third degree on a conviction handed down  in November 2014. He will have a chance at parole again in April 2026.
