During the recent Butler County Board of Education meeting on Apr. 18, several important items were discussed. One of the highlights of the meeting was Jill Marlar’s address regarding the implementation of more art programs within the Butler County school system.
Marlar, owner of Jill Marlar Creative and an advocate for the arts, emphasized the importance of injecting art, particularly through music and theater, into the curriculum without requiring additional funds or personnel.
“I’ve been reaching out to organizations like the Alabama Arts Alliance and the Expanded Learning Alliance to see what programs exist and what the needs are,” Marlar said. “I know these things take time, but I’m meeting with local schools to see what could be done. I’m just trying to be an arts advocate.”
During the meeting, the board took the time to recognize outstanding achievements in sports, celebrating the Georgiana School boys’ basketball team for their impressive victory as State 1A Champions. Kirk Norris was honored as the Alabama Coach of the Year, further highlighting the excellence of the Georgiana basketball program.
Additionally, the Greenville Parks and Recreation boys’ All-Stars basketball team was recognized for their State Championship win showcasing the talent and dedication of young athletes in Butler County.
The board approved financial statements, cash balances and bank reconciliations for February 2024. They also granted permission to advertise for bids for food for the Child Nutrition Program and furniture for the Georgiana School Cafeteria.
Other agenda items included permission for the Child Nutrition Program to sponsor a summer feeding program, authorization for board member Brandon Sellers to sign Greenville High School’s 2024 diplomas, and a change in the date for the May board meeting.
The meeting concluded with an executive session to discuss a student disciplinary hearing.
