Voters took to the polls Tuesday to cast their ballots for candidates vying for the U.S. Representative of the 2nd Congressional District. By late evening on April 16, all 28 counties in the district reported the results showing Democrat Shomari Figures and Republican Caroleene Dobson as the winners.

In a social media post Wednesday, first-time candidate Dobson thanked supporters for their support.

“Thank you to the people of my home district for believing in me,” Dobson tweeted. I am humbled by your outpouring of support and honored to be your Republican nominee.”

Figures clinched the Democratic nomination for the seat with 21,926 (61%) of the votes over her opponent, Anthony Daniels. Dobson defeated Dick Brewbaker by gaining 14,688 votes (58%) to receive the Republican nomination.

Leading up to the runoff, Alabama Senator Vivian Davis said she was proud of her son Figures.

“[I am] grateful for the support for my son Shomari’s campaign,” Davis said in a press statement Sunday. “I couldn’t be more proud of Shomari.”

Roughly 8% of 1,408,528 registered voters in the district turned out to vote.

Secretary of State Wes Allen provides election results as a courtesy through partnership with Alabama’s Probate Judges. According to the website, www2.alabamavotes.gov, accuracy of the election results is the responsibility of the Probate Judge for each reporting county.
