The Georgiana Police Department is gearing up for its inaugural “Smokin’ in the Park” cook-off fundraiser, scheduled to take place on Apr. 12-13 at Hank Williams Park. The event promises a savory showdown, featuring four mouthwatering categories: ribs, chicken, Boston butt, and sauce.
Contestants will battle it out for top honors, with first through third prizes awarded in each category. Grand prize winners will each receive $200, while second place will be awarded $150 and third place $50.
Beyond the culinary competition, attendees can enjoy live music, peruse antique cars and motorcycles, and explore offerings from local vendors and artisans.
Judging for the event will commence on Saturday, Apr. 13 at 2 p.m., followed by the sale of all food to raise funds for new equipment for the Georgiana Police Department.
Chief Jeremy Peagler expressed his enthusiasm for the event and outlined the schedule.
“Friday at around 7 p.m. people can come set up and start getting everything ready. On Saturday, the Park will open at 9 a.m. for the cooking to begin. Judging will start about 2 p.m. We’ll have three judges, judging on things like taste, texture, and presentation. The best part is, we provide the food, they just come on and cook it.”
Admission to the public is free, but there is a $50 registration fee per cook team. To register your team, visit the Georgiana Police department Facebook page or stop by the department for a paper registration form.
