The Rev. Dr. Allen J. Sims Sr., pastor of Dexter Avenue King Memorial Church, will be the guest speaker Saturday, Feb. 10, for the 2nd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Walk. 

“I am deeply honored to represent Dexter – and to be present in Greenville for this notable event,” said Sims. “This Freedom Walk commemorates the sacrifices of those who laid the foundation of the modern Civil Rights Movement, as well as those who continue to work for justice, equity and peace.”

The event begins at 11 a.m. and is organized by the Harrison Missionary Baptist Church of Greenville at 512 Harrison Street where the Rev. Frank James Splunge serves as pastor.

Sims will share his message from the same pulpit where his predecessor at Dexter, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., preached in December of 1965. During his tenure at Dexter, from 1954 to 1960, King began to champion nonviolent social protest as an expression of Christian values. Thanks to his leadership of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which resulted in the integration of public transportation, he emerged as a national and international figure.

The Walk is set to begin at the intersection of East Perdue and South Park Streets, will proceed roughly three blocks and end at the church, where the program will continue. Music will be provided by the Greenville Unity Choir, under the direction of Harold J. Daniels, II, pastor of New Beginning Worship Center, also of Greenville.
