Georgiana School students are in for a treat when school starts back on August 9. The students will be welcomed by new, hand-painted murals, illustrated by Michelle Black, co-owner of A Color Affair in Georgiana.
Black said she was thrilled when principal Deedra Benson reached out to her with the ideas for the upgrades.
“It’s nice to be able to help our schools,” Black said. “The faculty and staff are super excited about the added visuals to the school, and I hope the students are equally as excited and inspired by the murals.”
Black said she started working on the murals June 30, after consulting with Benson about her vision for the school.
“I told her my ideas and what we wanted, and she helped me through the process,” Benson said of Black. “The designs came out great, and I hope they will brighten the student’s daily lives in our school. The murals add color and ‘life’ to the atmosphere of our school as you enter through the main office and down at the cafeteria.”
Benson said she would like to add more designs to the school each year.
Pre-K Auxiliary Teacher Lawanda Paige said the new look in the school is very impressive, and will give insight to thinking and learning for the students.
“I can’t wait to see how the students will react,” she said. “The students will be inspired to expand their own creativity and expand their artistic skills, while being reminded with each glance, that ‘World Changers lead by Example.’ Students can find beauty in their everyday lives, which will also boost our school spirit.”
Teacher Shequetta Owens said she loves the creativity of the murals along with the incorporation of the school mascot within the design.
“We love our Panthers and we are so excited about this upcoming school year! The murals show the panthers on the prowl, as we are already excited about football season. Go Panthers!”, she exclaimed.
Black said she completed the project on July 10, just after celebrating A Color Affair’s 15-year anniversary in business on July 7. Black also said she enjoys painting murals, just about wherever she can, but helping schools is very special to her.
She was inspired to start painting murals, after experiencing the joy that came with her first painting, her son’s bedroom wall. Now in year 15, she and husband Danny have expanded their services, and offer many more printing services and graphic designs. A Color Affair is located at 230 Miranda Avenue in Georgiana, and can be reached at (334) 362-4013.
